Donald Huhn

November 27, 1927 — February 12, 2018

Donald J Huhn of Jackson, Wyoming died February 12, 2018 (age 90) of natural causes.

Don was born on November 7, 1927 to Joseph Huhn and Elizabeth Stein. He was raised with his sister Bernice in Van Wert Ohio. After going to one semester of college, he enlisted with the Navy in 1946. He served his two year enlistment in Chicago where he met his wife Lorraine Young. They were married February 19, 1949 and lived in Chicago for a couple years.

They moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Don attended John Carroll University. He graduated in 1953 with a degree in accounting. After college they moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where he started his career with General Electric, as a computer systems analyst for 37 years.

Don and Lorraine had 6 sons and a daughter who died in infancy. In 1960 the family started taking summer vacations to the western United States and Canada. Yellowstone and Disneyland became favorite destinations on these yearly trips. The family traveled in a VW van that was custom built by Don so they could sleep both inside the van and on top of it in a tent. The family’s love of the west, especially the Yellowstone area, led to four of his sons moving to Jackson, Wyoming.

Don retired from General Electric in 1992. In addition to his western vacation, Don and Lorraine started traveling to Hawaii every year, one of their favorite places. Don was known for his Hawaiian shirts which he wore year round. Walt Disney World was also a favorite destination. He was a huge fan of Disney.

His hobbies included working with stained glass, wood working, working on cars, reading and photography.

Don lost his wife Lorraine in 2005 after 56 years of marriage. He continued his yearly trips to     Hawaii and Walt Disney World. He started taking longer trips to Jackson, Wyoming sometimes twice a year to spend time with his sons and their families.

In September 2012, while vacationing in Hawaii, Don suffered a severe stroke that affected his mobility, his speech and his ability to read and write. No longer able to live on his own, he moved to Jackson, Wyoming to be closer to three of his sons and their families. Don became a resident of Legacy Lodge assisted living center and lived there until his death.

Don was a devout member of the Catholic Church. He was known for his great sense of humor and his positive cheery outlook on life. His warm smile and outgoing personality won over everyone who knew him. He never complained about what he had lost because of his stroke, instead he was grateful for what he had. He was a great inspiration and role model to all that knew him especially his family.

Don is survived by five sons, their wives and 11 grandchildren, Chris & Peggy Huhn of Battleground, Indiana and their two children Brent & Megan, Larry & Barb Huhn of Jackson, Wyoming and their four children Arte, Maria, Leslie & Savannah, Tony & Cindy Huhn of Jackson, Wyoming and their two children Colter & Bridger, Dan & Sandy Huhn of Sequim, Washington and Randy & Mindy Huhn of Jackson, Wyoming and their three children Kendra, Caitlin & Carson.

Don was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine (Young) in 2005, his oldest son Mike in 2017, his daughter Gail in 1960 and his sister Bernice Zwierko in 2009.
