On Thursday September 26 2019, Gloria Greenley Morgan, lovingly known as Georgie, passed away peacefully at her home in Wilson, Wyoming surrounded by her family. She was 92.
Georgie was born on March 24, 1927 in Oakland, California to Ann Veith Greenley who worked as a bookkeeper for a Hawaiian steamship operator. In 1937, mother and daughter moved to Dornach, Switzerland to study with Rudolph Steiner until returning to the United States when the war intensified. After settling in New York City, Georgie continued her Waldorf education before earning a full scholarship to Middlebury College where she graduated with honors in 1948. Soon after, Georgie met the love of her life, John Morgan, while they were both working at a summer resort in Vermont. Though a marriage proposal followed, it was another year of Georgie pursuing a career in journalism for the New York Times and John being a ranch hand in Jackson Hole before Georgie decided the ranch life was worth a try. They were married on August 4, 1949 at the Chapel of Transfiguration in Grand Teton National Park and settled into their first home on Snow King Mountain.
Life under the Tetons was fitting for Georgie who was passionate about the arts, education, the sciences and the spiritual power of the mountains. She was on the founding board of the Teton Science School, started the Jackson Hole Art Association, and was instrumental in integrating arts education into the local schools. She was also on the Wyoming Council for the Humanities, an active member of the Grand Teton Natural History and Library Associations, and joined John as an advocate of land preservation, establishing the first conservation easement in Wyoming. In her role as mother to the couple’s five daughters, Georgie was an advocate, teacher and support crew for activities that ranged from competitive skiing, 4-H and county fair events, and arts and crafts made around the dining room table. Georgie also enjoyed skiing, hiking, tennis and yoga, was an accomplished artist, and believed that our role in the world was to honor and care for all beings.
Georgie was preceded in death in 1963 by her mother who had moved to Jackson to be closer to the family, and John who passed away in 2000. She is survived by her daughters: Wendy Morgan (Nick Anderson); Kaidi Dunstan (Bob Dunstan) with children Mark and Wade; Penny Morgan with husband Steve Bunting and children Sarah and Will; Cindy Morgan-Jaffe with wife Tanya Renne and children Anna, Rose, Claire, Paul and Olivia; and Lisa Morgan with husband Kelly Elder and children Lee and Dylan. She had many friends near and far and from multiple generations who appreciated her wisdom, laugh and generous spirit.
A memorial service is planned for the summer of 2020 in Wilson, Wyoming. Donations may made in her memory to any Wyoming nonprofit that supports the arts, humanities, sciences or education.
