Lois Cathryn (McFarlane) Corbett was born to John and Myrtle McFarlane along the Popo Agie River between Hudson and Lander, Wyoming in 1934. In 1952, she graduated from Fremont County Vocational High School in Lander then attended college at Iowa State University. After studying art in New York City and Mexico City, she graduated with a B.S. in Home Economics in 1961 from the University of Wyoming.
During the early 1960s, Lois taught art and elementary school and initiated a high school art class in Jackson, Wyoming. She also worked in artist Conrad Schweiring’s studio and assisted Schweiring and other local artists with summertime plein air camps. She left Jackson in 1966 and attended school at the University of Arizona where she earned a BS in Applied Art and a BFA in Environmental Design. Afterward, she returned to Wyoming to teach art and elementary school at Fort Washakie School during the 1970s. In 1977, she married Robert Corbett in Jackson and worked as an Interior Designer for his architecture firm Corbett and Associates until her divorce in 1986. Her interior design work could be found in buildings including the original Jackson Hole Airport, Snow King Resort, and portions of Casper College.
Lois enjoyed and created art in many different mediums including drawing, watercolor and oil painting, ceramics, weaving, lithography, and beadwork. She also strongly supported women in politics, working as an election judge for many years. Later in life she became a Nursing Assistant, providing and organizing loving care for three Jackson Hole women, including Mardie Murie, as well as helping to care for her beloved granddaughter.
Lois is survived by her sister Ann Gallinger in Boisie, Idaho, and her daughter Kirsten Ann Corbett, son-in-law Dave Simpson, and granddaughter Marisa Corbett Simpson in Jackson, Wyoming. Her family and friends remember her as a creative spirit and a lover of travel and camping who instigated many road trips and adventures, bringing along those she loved and creating fun for all.
A small family memorial was held on August 15 to help Lois fulfill her wish to rest in a field of flowers. A memorial to contribute to tribal members at Ft. Washakie, Wyoming will be created in her memory.
